Obama commits to High-Speed Rail in California
California’s High-Speed Rail project is headed full-speed ahead, according to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, who held a meeting with Business Manager Russ Burns and other Labor Leaders on Feb. 9.
LaHood made the trip from Washington, D.C. to California’s capitol to reaffirm President Obama’s support. “We are not only investing in state-of-the-art transportation that will be our legacy for generations to come; we are investing in American workers right now,” he said.
LaHood explained that big ideas and big projects are often met with controversy, but “passenger rail is the next generation of transportation – not for us, but for our kids and grandkids,” he said. “No other state is as prepared for it as California.”
According to Burns, who sits on the High-Speed Rail Authority Board, “This solidifies Obama’s commitment to this project. I firmly believe we can build our way out of this recession, create thousands of jobs and build a world-class transportation system that this state desperately needs.”
Obama plans to have operators moving dirt on High-Speed Rail by the year’s end.
