VOTE influences major Utah transportation bill
The power of the Voice of the Engineer (VOTE) program was made very clear in Utah on May 6. Dale Cox, Local 3's Political Coordinator in Utah, was instrumental in using the political process to garner the support from the construction industry that was needed to get this bill passed. "This bill will go a long way toward funding future infrastructure improvements in the state of Utah," said Cox.
During the regular session of the Legislature, we were able to pass Senate Bill (SB) 229, which sets aside funds from future sales tax and automobile-related sales for transportation. The bill is estimated to bring in $60 million or more, which may be used to fund road projects. Complete bill details can be found at this link: Utah Transportation Bill (SB 229)
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert vetoed the bill, claiming he didn’t like earmarks, but with the years of hard work our members have committed to supporting and helping our elected officials, we were able to get our legislative friends (and even a few not-so-friendly legislators!) to vote with us and override his veto. We wish to thank the following legislators:
Rep. Mel Brown
Sen. Gene Davis
Rep. Susan Duckworth
Rep. Jim Dunnigan
Rep. Janice Fisher
Rep. Lynn Hemingway
Rep. David Litvack
Sen. Karen Mayne
Sen. Ben McAdams
Rep. Curtis Oda
Rep. Jen Seelig
Rep. Christine Watkins
Rep. Larry Wiley
With new U.S. Sen. Mike Lee refusing to accept or seek federal monies for Utah, we need to find other avenues for revenue to fund the transportation industry and consequently, our jobs. Therefore, please keep up the good work, and remember: When you read about endorsed candidates in the Engineers News, give them your vote and sign-up to volunteer in the VOTE program!
