Dan Reding, vice president

Dan Reding was appointed vice president in February 2013 after being voted into office as financial secretary in September 2012. Reding was elected treasurer and sworn in on September 1, 2006. Reding joined Local 3 in 1984. He grew up in Napa and graduated from Napa High School. Before beginning his career as an Operating Engineer, Reding took business courses at Napa and Solano Community College. He spent five years working underground for Cal Smith & Sons and then worked at Ghilotti Brothers, running paddle wheels and scrapers, and dozers for McCullian Construction.
Reding then went to work for Bechtel as a dirt foreman on the Shell Clean Fuel Project and became general foreman as the project progressed. After the Shell project, he started working in the crane industry, beginning on small hydros and then moving into conventionals. The next seven years were spent with Balfour and Beatty, working on the Bay Bridge, the first phase of the Golden Gate Bridge and the new water intake in Sacramento.
Reding served eight years on the Grievance Committee in Fairfield, where he got his first taste in politics and union business. In 2003, he accepted a business agent position in Sacramento, covering Yolo and parts of Sacramento, including the rock, sand and gravel plants in Madison.
Reding has been involved in contract negotiations and grievance procedures, including intensive time spent working with Caltrans’ issues. After two years as a business agent, he was promoted to assistant district representative and to district representative within four months. Dan graduated from the Harvard Trade Union Program in February 2008.
